HAPPY NON-GMO MONTH

Every October, we join the Non-GMO Project in celebrating Non-GMO Month, and we acknowledge their tireless efforts to keep the public informed about the concerns and impacts of genetically modified organisms in our food system. Non-GMO Month began as a way to support farmers, companies, and retailers that encourage and educate consumers, so they can make informed choices when they shop.*

A quick way to know if a product is non-GMO is whether it’s organic. Currently, in the United States, a product can only be certified as organic if it is also non-GMO.  According to USDA regulation, organic “farmers and processors must show they aren’t using GMOs and that they are protecting their products from contact with prohibited substances from farm to table.”

If you want to learn more about GMOs and their impact, visit the Non-GMO Project.

SEASONAL PRODUCE

SEASONAL FRUITS

We declare October as the month for pears. Like apples, different varieties offer different flavor profiles, so there is definitely a pear out there just for you. From buttery to sweet to mild to honeyed, we suggest you try them all to find your favorite. We all know they make a fantastic snack when eaten raw, but give them a try in stir-fries to incorporate some sweetness to all those savory notes. Grill them on a pizza with pancetta or prosciutto, poach them with cinnamon and nutmeg, or try them stuffed like in this Blue Cheese Stuffed Pears recipe. With their anti-inflammatory properties and beneficial compounds, adding these to your menu is a no-brainer.

SEASONAL VEGGIES

Butternut squash soup. Stuffed acorn squash. Baked spaghetti squash with mozzarella and tomato sauce. If it’s fall, it’s time to bake, roast, and cook up some squash. This low-calorie vegetable has heart-healthy potassium and magnesium, is great for your digestion, and has antioxidants that fight free radicals. If you’re having trouble deciding, try our helpful Squash Guide to figure out which one is just right for your dinner table.

While you’re here, be sure to pick up a helping of the deli’s Roasted Root Vegetables. Expertly seasoned with garlic, mint, rosemary, thyme, sea salt, and black pepper, it’s a satisfying fall dish and makes an easy side option for a weeknight meal.

THERE’S A SOUP FOR THAT

Need a little cozy comfort? Try some butternut squash soup. Feeling under the weather? Chicken soup to the rescue. Need something hearty that you can make ahead? Lentil soup is a perfect choice. We are beginning the season of soup. Whether it’s part of your meal or the main dish, it is a wonderfully nourishing option. The next time you’re browsing our produce section, grab base ingredients like carrots, celery, and onion, so you’re ready with the freshest, organic items when you have some soup inspiration. WELLNESS MATTERS

There is something to be said for slowing down and enjoying a cup of well-made tea. Depending on what you choose, a cup of tea can help support your health, from aiding better digestion to anti-inflammatory benefits to helping ready your body for sleep at the end of the day. While not a supplement, tea can be a wonderful daily resource.

With that in mind, this month, Steve is highlighting Rishi’s Turmeric Ginger Tea. Rishi’s teas are organic and imported directly from growers. Rishi is purposefully engaged in the importing process to ensure their sourcing meets their sustainability and quality standards. Their Turmeric Ginger Tea brings two powerhouses together. Turmeric and ginger both have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits, as well as heart and digestive support. And every sip has an inviting citrusy zing. As the nights get colder, cozy up with a warm cup of good health.

SMOOTHIE OF THE MONTH: WITCHES BREW

This October, our cauldrons are brimming with a delicious alchemy of fruit, protein, and a pinch of sugar for a smoothie that will leave you spellbound. Our Witches Brew Smoothie is a potion of organic frozen banana, plant-based vanilla protein powder, organic blueberry puree, and a pinch of sugar. It’s a concoction that will have you ready for whatever the day brings.

CHARITY OF THE MONTH: ORKESTAI FARM

Founded in 2014, Orkestai Farm practices “Expressive Agriculture: an embodied expression of mindful and artful living, connection with the natural world, our senses, emotions, and relationships.” From teaching adults how to farm organically, to providing children of all needs and learning styles a beginning understanding of farming, and to celebrating the philosophy of slowing down and renewing the spirit, Orkestai cultivates ecological agriculture, expressive arts, and inclusive education.
