CHARITY OF THE MONTH: Coalition to Save Hempstead Harbor

We are so excited to announce our August Charity of the Month: the Coalition to Save Hempstead Harbor!

Since 1986, the Coalition to Save Hempstead Harbor (CSHH), a volunteer, nonprofit organization, has been dedicated to identifying and eliminating environmental threats to Hempstead Harbor and its surrounding communities. Their objective is to advance the public interest in protecting and restoring our local environment to its full ecological and economic potential.

Why We Chose the Coalition to Save Hempstead Harbor
We love that the CSHH executes its mission by promoting appreciation of the local environment and getting the public involved in local conservation issues—issues that directly affect the community we call home!

If you would like to donate to the Coalition to Save Hempstead Harbor above and beyond your BYOB donations, e-mail Liz at marketing@risingtidemarket.com.

And if you want to help improve the local environment and make a difference in and around Hempstead Harbor, consider becoming a member of the Coalition. No experience necessary. Be part of the change!

NEW: Rising Tide Branded Supplements

We’re so proud to introduce our line of Rising Tide branded supplements. Made with only clean ingredients, and meeting the highest standards in the industry, these supplements—some 120 to date—represent 41 years of Rising Tide’s commitment to providing the best possible products for our customers.

Why, you ask, did we get into the supplement business? As you may know, the supplement industry has been going through some changes. One-time innovators like Solgar, Country Life, Twin Labs and others have sold out to larger, publicly held companies, drastically diminishing their standards. Since we have reduced our stock of these products, we sought to fill the gap using a transparent company that lets us bring you third-party tested, researched and affordable supplements we can be proud to label with the Rising Tide name.

We’re offering a full line of supplements, something to meet every one of your health needs:

  • Vitamins
  • Minerals
  • Probiotics
  • Protein powders
  • and More!

**ALL RISING TIDE BRANDED SUPPLEMENTS ARE 20% off ALL THE TIME for our Grateful Card members!**

Only the Best Will Do For National Ice Cream Month

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day (this year, it will be celebrated on Sunday, July 16). He was clearly on to something; according to the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA), the average American consumes approximately 23 POUNDS of ice cream annually. Yes, Americans love their cold, creamy desserts.

If you’re an ice cream lover in this neck of the woods, you’re in luck: Some of the best ice cream spots on Long Island, consistently voted so year after year, are located right here in Nassau County. If you haven’t been yet, this is the perfect month to check out Skipperdee’s L’il Cupcake and Ice Cream Shop in Point Lookout (an old fashioned ice cream parlor and candy shop); Marvel Ice Cream in Lido Beach (soft serve heaven) and Douglas and James in Port Washington (a traditional scoop shop serving homemade flavors in a waterfront setting). For ice cream sandwiches the likes of which you have never seen, hit up Frozen Sin ice cream truck, serving up beautiful treats made with local, seasonal ingredients. (Note: for pure vanilla creaminess right here in Glen Cove, Rising Tide has amazing deals on Alden’s Organic ice cream this month (Mint Chip, Chocolate Chocolate Chip, Vanilla Bean and Vanilla & Chocolate Swirl)…$5.99/48 oz container. Yum!

Non-Dairy Ice Cream
If you’re vegan but still crave some really tasty creamy goodness this summer, here is a list of the best vegan ice cream spots in NYC. Or just come into Rising Tide; we’ve got a few vegans on our team that make sure we carry the good stuff: Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream in Coffee, Salted Caramel, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, $10.99/14oz.

BYOB Program is Big Success

We are thrilled to report that the first month of our Bring Your Own Bag (BYOB) program was a whopping success. We saved hundreds of paper bags and are set to donate over $600 to our first-ever Charity of the Month: the North Shore INN.

And it is all because of YOU!

Here are the details:

  • From April 22-May 31, 2016: 1,939 customers brought in reusable bags
  • From April 22-May 31, 2017: 3,861 customers brought in reusable bags….a 50% increase over last year!
  • The North Shore INN will receive a check from us for $626.75. The nonprofit soup kitchen was established in 1989 to feed hungry people in the Glen Cove area, and serves hot meals on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from noon to 1:00 p.m. in the First Baptist Church. (In addition to this BYOB donation, Rising Tide Natural Market has a longstanding relationship with the INN, donating food each Friday.)

So, just to recap–we reduced our paper bag usage by HALF during the first month of the BYOB initiative, and are on pace for our overall goal: reducing the number of paper bags by half FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR. So let’s not let up! Researchers say it takes an average of 66 days for a new habit to stick.

Keep bringing those reusable bags!

JUNE CHARITY OF THE MONTH

Our June Charity of the Month is Cove Animal Rescue. It’s mission is another one we can REALLY get behind: to increase the adoptability of homeless dogs and cats through training, socialization and improved surroundings (like it’s amazing cage-free cat wing!) that facilitate transition to a home environment.

Thank you again for jumping on board with this important initiative!

Hemp History Week, June 5-11

Hemp has long been a darling of the environmentally conscious consumer. What many people DON’T know is that hemp contains no significant amount of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and as such, it’s impossible to get high from it. Despite this reality (and hemp’s many redeeming features), hemp is still considered a Schedule 1 Narcotic under the Controlled Substances Act.

How archaic!

This year, the 8th annual Hemp History Week celebrates America’s rich history with industrial hemp BEFORE it was outlawed (the Declaration of Independence was written on hemp!), and educates consumers about the barriers to hemp farming in the United States.

More Facts About Hemp:
* Hemp seeds are an amazing source of sustainable protein (more protein than even chia or flax seeds…add to smoothies, or sprinkle on cereals, yogurt and salads), are anti-inflammatory, great for your skin (thank you, amino acids!), can balance hormones and even reduce pain. And hemp seed oil–the oil derived from pressed hemp seeds–contains the most heart-friendly essential fatty acids of any nut or seed oil.
* The cultivation of environmentally-friendly hemp yields more protein while requiring significantly less of each natural resource (land, water, fossil fuel) and producing fewer emissions than protein that comes from animal sources.
* Hemp crops pay. In Canada, hemp nets $200-$400 per acre, while just across the border, U.S. soy and corn typically net less than $160 an acre, according to the USDA.
*  Millions of U.S. cars made by Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, and Tesla Motors are already being built with interior hemp-composite panels. If these companies could source U.S. grown hemp it would create long-term jobs in all sectors, strengthen regional economies, and maximize supply chain efficiencies. It’s a win-win-win!

At Rising Tide, we’re getting behind hemp all week by discounting hemp products from one of our favorite vendors: Nutiva. Check out the end cap all week and add some hemp into your life!

For more information about hemp and what you can do to help change Federal policy on hemp farming in the U.S., click here, and join Hemp History Week on Facebook.

Coming This Month: Two Exciting Events from Slow Food North Shore

We love that there are local organizations so closely aligned to our mission. One such group is Slow Food North Shore, one of two Long Island chapters of the nonprofit group Slow Food USA, headed up by chef, food activist, and our good friend Bhavani Jaroff of ieatgreen.com.

Two exciting Slow Food events in June will introduce you to what Slow Food North Shore is all about: getting together to share good ideas and delicious, clean, local food. On June 16, enjoy a tour of the Brooklyn Grange Rooftop Farm in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, plus a wine tasting at the rooftop vineyard, Rooftop Reds. The evening is capped off with gourmet pizza you don’t want to miss.

And don’t miss Slow Food North Shore’s Summer Solstice Potluck Party on Sat., June 17, featuring great food (Rising Tide will be providing the Cocktail Hour munchies!), live music, and a beautiful setting at Restoration Farm in Old Bethpage. A bunch of us will be there…hope to see you!

Click here for more on both events. Hope to see you at one/both!

World Fair Trade Day is May 13

Here in the first world we take our bananas, chocolate and coffee (oh yes, especially our coffee!) for granted. But many people in other countries are not so lucky. Each day, tens of thousands of people in various Asian, African and South American countries—men, women and even children—work themselves to the bone in unbearable conditions for pennies so we can continue to enjoy the things we love.

The Fair Trade movement seeks to level the playing field for workers around the world, ensuring that everyone enjoys decent wages and working conditions, regardless of where they live. Other principles of the Fair Trade movement: no child or forced labor, environmental sustainability, workplace non-discrimination, and investment in community development projects.

Set on the second Saturday of May each year since 2004, World Fair Trade Day is a global event designed to draw attention to the objectives of the Fair Trade movement.  This is a great time to consider choosing Fair Trade alternatives for some of your favorite products.

How Do I Shop Fair Trade?
More than just chocolate, coffee and bananas, the Fair Trade designation can refer to any of the following:
* a variety of agricultural and handcrafted goods, including baskets
* clothing
* cotton
* coconuts
* home and kitchen decor
* jewelry
* rice
* soap
* tea
* toys
* wine

How Do You Know If It’s Really Fair Trade?
There are different third-party certifications for Fair Trade products. Depending on the certification, they may inspect fields, processing plants, and sometimes trading operations to ensure fair trade standards are met. Check the websites of your favorite fair trade brands to learn more about what they are doing to empower workers to organize and tend to what matters the most to them (and to us!): their families, their communities and the environment.

Today, in honor of World Fair Trade Day (and why not make it the rest of the month?), choose products from some of our favorite Fair Trade brands committed to working with small-scale farmers within the framework of the Fair Trade movement. TheoDr. Bronner’s, Alter Eco, Alaffia and Guayaki are all ON SALE this month at Rising Tide Market.

Happy World Fair Trade Day!

Starting Earth Day, Rising Tide Goes B.Y.O.B

This Earth Day (April 22), we’re launching a green initiative that’ll be a game changer (and a no-brainer!) for us and our customers. In order to reduce the number of paper bags we’re using (and the trees we’re destroying in the process), we’re committing 100% to a Bring Your Own Bag (B.Y.O.B.) policy at Rising Tide Market.

Here’s how it works: While we’ve always rewarded customers for bringing in reusable bags, now we will ask you if you would like that reward ($.10/bag) to be donated to a local charity instead.

In addition, for every paper grocery bag we give out, we will CHARGE $.10, which will—you guessed it—be donated to a local charity as well. The charity will change every month and will be clearly posted above the registers for you to read all about.

In 2016, we gave out 101,000 paper grocery bags. Through this B.Y.O.B. initiative, we’re hoping to cut that number in HALF in 2017! (To help the cause we’re also selling our reusable Rising Tide grocery bags AT COST: 2 for $3.)

This eco-partnership with our customers is a win-win: our customers develop new, greener, planet-saving habits around grocery shopping (B.Y.O.B.!), and we give a hand to the folks living in our community that need it the most. The first charity we will contribute to is the North Shore INN, a nonprofit, volunteer-based soup kitchen formed in 1989 to feed hungry people living in the Glen Cove area.

If you have any questions about this program, feel free to ask any staff member. Thanks, as always, for your support! We know you’ll help make this initiate a great success!

Love Up Your Heart!

February is all about HEARTS: the ones that say “I love you,” and the ones that let us live a life we love. In honor of American Heart Month, our focus is on what we can all do to reduce our risk of developing heart disease, still the No. 1 killer of both men and women in the United States.

That’s the bad news. The good (we think GREAT) news is that research increasingly shows that with the exception of a small genetic component, heart disease can largely be prevented by changes to your LIFESTYLE…and these are changes you can easily implement. One step at a time…

Here are 5 heart-friendly lifestyle fixes to choose from in 2017, adapted from a blog post by Dr. Mark Hyman, one of our favorite functional medicine doctors. For the complete post, click here.
1. Eat a Healthy, Whole Foods Diet. Aim for 8-10 servings of colorful fruits and veggies each day.
2. Steady Your Blood Sugar. Stabilize blood sugar by eating protein, healthy fats and healthy carbohydrates at every meal. Avoid processed sugars.
3. Increase Your Fiber Intake. Work your way up to 50g of fiber (veggies, nuts, seeds, and low-sugar fruits like berries) per day.
4. Avoid processed, junk foods. That includes sodas, juices and diet drinks.
5. Get Out and Move! Research shows 30-45 minutes of cardiovascular exercise at least five times/week can benefit your heart.

To go along with these lifestyle hacks, there are also a few supplements that are naturally good for your most vital organ. One of our favorites at Rising Tide is Ubiquinol (the reduced form of CoQ10, and the form your body naturally uses). Studies show that supplementing with CoQ10/Ubiquinol plays a critical role in the creation of cellular energy needed by important organs like the heart and brain. It’s also super important if you’re taking statins, which are known to lower natural levels of ubiquinol in the body and heart. We love the ubiquinol products by Bluebonnet, now in smaller vegetarian softgels for easier swallowing.

Another great heart-healthy supplement is the mighty Pomegranate, shown to prevent—and in some cases reverse—cardiovascular disease. A growing body of evidence suggests that the compounds in pomegranate known as punicalagins are cardioprotective due to their powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. We like Pomegranate Complete by LifeExtension, which includes aspects of the whole pomegranate plant—even the seeds and the flowers! Just one softgel provides equivalent antioxidant content of approximately 24-30 pomegranates!

Make 2017 the year you get serious about your heart. We promise, any changes you make to help your heart will be beneficial for the rest of your parts, too!

Road Trip! Rising Tide Treks to Expo West

We’re going back to where it all started! The organic, health food movement had its origins out West, and California is still at the cutting edge of everything new and exciting in the natural foods world.

That’s why we’re so excited every year to attend the Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim, California, THE world’s largest natural, organic and healthy products event and THE defining natural products show of the year. (This show is HUGE; it actually takes a full five days to get through everything!)

Jerry, Ashley P., Ashley C. and Alyson will all be in attendance this year, and they’ll be on the look out for the hot, new trends, and all the products we know you guys will love. Once we select the items to bring into the store, it will take some time for us to access them here on the East coast. By the Fall we’ll have all the goodies on the shelves.

The Expo is next month, March 8-12. Stay tuned to Facebook and Instagram—we’ll be posting our adventures along the way!

Rising Tide Offers a HOT New Breakfast Option

At Rising Tide Market we love OATMEAL! So we are so excited to bring it to you all—hot, organic, and super tasty—every morning of the week. You won’t find a better, healthier breakfast for these chilly winter mornings.

Besides it’s obvious charms, oatmeal is itself a superfood, with tons of studies to back up its benefit as part of a whole foods diet. First, oats are loaded with all kinds of nutrition—vitamins, minerals and anti-inflammatory antioxidants—and are a great source of healthy carbs. Filled with soluble fiber (making you feel fuller, longer), your morning oatmeal can also reduce your levels of “bad” LDL cholesterol and promote the growth of healthy bacteria in the gut. If that is not enough (!), oats can also reduce blood sugar levels, lowering your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

WOW! We always liked the taste, but now we know oatmeal is the real deal.

Plus we make it extra specially delicious by providing a whole collection of organic superfood toppings:

  • raisins
  • dried cranberries
  • shredded coconut
  • toasted walnuts
  • coconut sugar
  • chia seeds
  • hemp seeds
  • cacao nibs

Style your oatmeal as you like it, and enjoy. It’s here waiting for you.

Coming Soon: B.Y.O.B. (Bring Your Own Bag….this time we mean it!)

As part of our mission to nourish our community through the products we sell and the knowledge we share, we believe it falls on us to take the lead in establishing practices that nourish and protect our planet, as well. That’s the impetus for our new experimental initiative: B.Y.O.B (Bring Your Own Bag!).

Rising Tide spent $12,800 on 101,000 paper grocery bags in 2016. (We eliminated the use of plastic bags back in 2012, and the customers loved it!) While we’ve previously awarded customers with $.10 for every reusable bag they use at the store, it has not resulted in a reduction in the number of bags.

So we decided to take the idea a few steps further this year.

1. For every paper bag we use to bag your groceries, we will charge you $.10. The proceeds will be DONATED to local charities, a different non-profit entity each month. (The Cause of the Month will be clearly displayed by the registers.)

2. For every reusable bag you shop with…HOORAY! You are doing something incredible to protect our trees and the life of our planet.

3. We will continue to sell our reusable Rising Tide shopping bags to you AT COST: $1.99/each.

4. Last but not least: In 2017, Rising Tide will commit to spending the same $12,800 on grocery bags we spent in 2016 OR…every dollar we don’t have to spend on bags (because you are all bringing in your reusable ones) will be donated at the end of each month to that month’s charity of choice. (For example, if we reduce the number of bags in half, and spend $6,400, we will donate the remaining $6,400 to our local charities.)

So…we don’t profit on this initiative, but if it works, we do something great for the environment AND help out lots of folks in the Glen Cove community. Plus, we will have joined together as a community to make a difference, which is awesome, too. A number of forward-thinking and progressive communities from coast to coast have already embarked on similar tree-saving initiatives, and we feel a bold project like this will resonate with our community, as well.

We’re sure you’ll have questions. Please feel free to ask about this when you’re in the store. We are genuinely excited to put our efforts toward a healthier planet and a more sustainable future. We hope you’ll get behind it, too!

Great Guts!

Your body contains about 100 trillion bacteria – more than 10 times the number of cells in your entire body. The type and quantity of microorganisms in your gut—widely considered to be our body’s “second brain”— interact with your body in ways that can either prevent or encourage the development of all kinds of conditions (and can affect your mood, skin, immune system, digestion, etc.). Studies also show a direct correlation between probiotic intake and weight loss, possibly due to the effect probiotics have on hormones and proteins related to appetite and fat storage.

The ideal ratio between the bacteria in your gut is 85 percent “good” and 15 percent “bad.” Maintaining this optimal ratio is essential…but not always easy. Lifestyle and environmental factors like stress, pollution, processed foods and more can throw gut flora out of whack. Fermented foods (krauts, yogurt, kimchi, kefir, kombucha, etc.) can help to right some of those gut disparities.

If you find you’re not getting enough of these foods, opt for a probiotic supplement (best taken just before, during or after a meal). Make sure your supplement has a minimum of 3-50 billion CFUs (Colony Forming Units), and that it targets your specific health concerns.

Here’s some more to consider when choosing an effective probiotic supplement, according to natural health expert Dr. Joseph Mercola:

  • Make sure it’s a reputable brand that you can trust
  • Make sure the package is resealable. Is it being stored as directed on the product label?
  • Ensure that it does not contain any bioengineered ingredients (GMOs)
  • Confirm that the product is manufactured according to current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP)
  • How many different strains of bacteria does it contain? Look for a product with multiple strains to work throughout your gastrointestinal tract
  • Look for valuable strains, including species of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria. Some of the more important strains include:
    • Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus plantarum that reside in the small intestine or the upper GI tract among your immune cells.
    • Bifidobacterium lactis, Bifidobacterium longum, and Bifidobacterium bifidum that reside in the large intestine or the lower bowel, which are also critical areas for health.

One brand we love here at Rising Tide is Garden of Life; all of our Garden of Life Probiotics –including the Dr. Formulated products, customized by brain health expert and best-selling author of Grain Brain, Dr. David Perlmutter–will be on sale for 20% off the original price during the entire month of January.

Make 2017 The Year of the Gut!

5 Steps to a Healthier 2017

We love the idea of starting the year off on a healthy, positive note. Resolutions to eat better, work out more, call mom every week…they often fall by the wayside despite our best intentions (roughly 75% of people stick to their goals for at least a week, while less than half are still on target six months later). The problem is often that the resolutions we make are too broad to commit to. Studies show the more specific your goals the better (not: I’m going to work out more, but: I’m going to start running for 20 minutes, 3x/week). Another way to improve your resolution stick-to-it-ive-ness? Ask a friend for support. Better yet? Support each other.

Here are a few easy habits to change in 2017 to improve overall health and vitality. Keep it manageable; start with just one, then add in more once you’ve got the first one nailed.

Eat fermented foods. The process that turns fermented foods into probiotic powerhouses also boost levels of good bacteria in your digestive tract, improving the health and balance of your body’s collective microbiome, or bacterial community. A healthier microbiome, in turn, has been shown to aid in digestion, increase immunity, prevent disease, and—according to some preliminary studies—reduce blood pressure and keep you slim.

As we are completely taken with cultured foods of all kinds, naturally we are stock our shelves with them, as well. Check out our dairy case for all kinds of probiotic-rich goodies: krauts, kefir, yogurt, gut shots, kim chee. We’ve also got kombucha on tap, and a whole range of probiotic supplements that will provide similar health benefits.

Resolution: Eat 1 tablespoon of raw sauerkraut with each meal.

Hydrate.  It’s been said that Water is life. That’s because our bodies are composed of roughly 60% water, so when we’re dehydrated – and most of us spend our days dehydrated to some degree – we affect the performance of the majority of our body. Nearly all of our systems do not function as well without the proper water intake. So start 2017 with a goal to hydrate better. Water is the ideal; carry a bottle with you to remind you to drink throughout the day (our favorites are from Hydro Flask and Life Factory; we’ve got both here in the store). Tired of regular water? Try infusing with organic fruits and herbs. Want to alkalize your tap water? We’ve got New Wave Alkaline Filter Pitchers that raise the water’s pH by adding the perfect balance of naturally ionized magnesium, potassium, calcium and sodium.

Take a break from water with the mild, sweet, refreshing taste of coconut water, known as a high-electrolyte beverage, and thus a super hydrater. Harmless Harvest  is our favorite, made from 100% certified organic Thai coconuts.

Resolution: Instead of worrying about how many ounces you need in relation to your body weight, etc., try something new: Drink when you’re thirsty.

Get outside. Yup. Even in the winter. Even in the SNOW. There is a laundry list of reasons why spending time outdoors can improve your life: it increases concentration, it can reinvigorate a stale exercise routine, get you some much needed Vitamin D—but we think the most important reason is that being outdoors makes you FEEL BETTER. It improves your MOOD, which will set you up for all other good things to come your way. Dress properly, stay hydrated (yes, you can dehydrate, even in the cold weather) and enjoy the beauty of Mother Nature’s sleep cycle.

Resolution: Vow to get out for 30 minutes, 3x/week. Walk the dog, snowshoe, take a forest walk, go for a run.

Meditate. Download one of the popular meditation apps, or just sit quietly for a few minutes each day and focus on your breath. It’s that simple, and offers a host of whole body benefits (reduces stress, minimizes symptoms of anxiety and depression, improves sleep, increases focus, to name a few). Don’t miss out on a more relaxing 2017.

Resolution: Meditate for 5 minutes, 2x/day.

Eat more superfoods.  This word gets thrown around a lot so it doesn’t mean much…except to single out foods that are nutrient dense (have a dense concentration of vitamins, minerals, good fats, healthy enzymes—generally with fewer calories) and help to treat, lower the risk of, or prevent specific health conditions. Our favorite easy way to get more superfoods? Throw them in the blender. Yup, your morning smoothie is a convenient receptacle for all those antioxidant packed foods we know we should be eating, but never get around to. Sunfood makes an incredible line of raw (read: pure and unadulterated), delicious superfood powders that turn an ordinary smoothie into a true powerhouse breakfast. Choose from Acai, Moringa, Camu Camu, Goji Berry, Maca, and Mixed Berry Smoothie Mix (contains many of the above superfoods, plus banana, cacao, and brown rice protein). If you’d rather DIY, our Bulk Section contains a bunch of superfoods—chia, hemp, goji berries, cacao nibs—that are great both in smoothies and in baking, hot cereals, salads and more.

Resolution: Eat two “superfoods” each day (not sure which foods actually qualify as such? Chances are if you think they’re super, they are). Here’s a pretty thorough list to use as a cheatsheet.

Power to the PEAple

Calling All Modern Hippies!

If you care about how your munchies affect your body (and spirit) AND the planet we live on, Hippeas Organic Chickpea Puffs wants YOU.

This LA-based snack co. believes that chickpea by chickpea, they can change things for the better. And if their new chickpea snacks are any indication, we think they might just be right. The pepper power Hippeas chickpea puffs are on our list of new things to LOVE. Organic, non-GMO, gluten free, vegan, with 3 gm of fiber and 4 gm of protein per 1oz serving, they’re just about the best 130 calorie snack you can find.

Lest you forget, chickpeas are super healthy. As members of the legume family, most of their fiber is insoluble, which is great for digestive health. And they’re so packed with fiber and protein, they help to regulate blood sugar in those who eat them. Plus, chickpea plants are really good for the planet, too, as they naturally release nitrogen back into the earth as they grow. Good for you and the planet! That’s our favorite kind of win-win.

As part of their mission to make change from the ground up, Hippeas supports Farm Africa, enabling farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa to grow their own way out of poverty. You’ve got to love the mission (and we think you’ll dig the snacks, too!).

We’ve got Hippeas Organic Chickpea Puffs in sriracha sunshine, pepper power, happenin’ hickory, and vegan white cheddar in 1oz snack size bags (and all those flavors plus maple haze and far out fajita in 4oz bags…for sharing!).

It’s National Bulk Foods Week: Celebrate with 20% off All Bulk

Like hundreds of natural food retailers around the country, we’re chiming in this week to tell you how much we LOVE BULK, and to share the benefits of shopping the Bulk section with you, our friends and customers.

Why Go Bulk?

We’ve been sold a bill of goods here in the West. Want to save money, and eat healthy on the fly? The ads all point toward grab and go meals from the grocery store. The truth is, the more you focus on purchasing local, organic, unprocessed food and preparing meals at home, the healthier and tastier your meals will be, the better you’ll feel, and the more money you’ll save.

Enter the Bulk Section.

Affordable dried goods are one way to reduce food expenses while still enjoying tasty, nutritious meals. With a little planning and effort, it’s possible to enjoy healthy food on the cheap.

Top 6 Reasons to Go Bulk

  1. Bins are replenished often, so ingredients are super fresh.
  2. You can buy as much or as little as you need, so you can experiment with new products without getting stuck with something you don’t like.
  3. There’s much less wasteful packaging.
  4. Many of our bulk offerings are organically grown.
  5. You save money because you’re not paying for the fancy labels
  6. When you shop bulk, you can actually see your food before you buy it, not just trust some fancy picture on a box.

Need more incentive to shop in Bulk? Check out our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/RisingTideNaturalMarket/) throughout the week for more great ideas for how and why to make a visit to the Bulk section a regular part of your grocery shopping routine.

Make sure to come in to Rising Tide from Oct. 16-22, when our ENTIRE BULK SECTION IS 20% OFF.

And enter to win the Rising Tide Market BULK BASKET, filled with a selection of top-selling items from our Bulk section (a $75 value). One raffle ticket per BULK purchase.

Happy Bulk Shopping!

Himalaya Herbal Healthcare: Best Sellers 20% off!

Himalaya is a family-owned company founded in 1930 on the principles of the world’s oldest system of medicine, Ayurveda. In the business we’re in, we view Himalaya products as among the best, for a few reasons.

First, this is a company that controls the entire process from seed (they grow all their own herbs) to shelf. Second, nearly all of their products are non-GMO certified, with the Non-GMO Project seal to prove it. And, most impressively, they provide product-specific, double-blind, placebo-controlled human clinical trials on all their products—so the Himalaya name is backed by science, and this makes us feel great.

Experience the Himalaya difference for yourself. All Himalaya best sellers are  on sale, 20% off thru the end of October.

**Come in Monday, Oct. 10 from 11:30-2:30** to pick up samples of some of our top-selling Himalaya products, including antioxidant powerhouse Turmeric (with Curcumin), Ashwaganda, a remarkable stress-reducing adaptogenic herb, and their amazing (and amazingly different!) Neem & Pomegranate toothpaste—made with all the sparkle, and none of the bad stuff.

And a bonus…

While supplies last, we’re giving away offer a **FREE handmade sari tote bag** to every customer purchasing two or more Himalaya products. Bags are made from recycled traditional saris in India and help to empower self-employed female workers. A great bag = a good deed!

Crunch Into History With Heirloom Apples

The history of the apple and human enjoyment goes back thousands of years. Greek literary references mention them at about 800 B.C., while archaeological excavations have dated human related apple remains (um, cores?) back to 6000 B.C. No matter how you slice it, apples have been part of human culture long enough to describe some 17,000 (17,000!) varieties.

Thanks to the efforts of apple enthusiasts everywhere, many of North America’s earliest—or heirloom—apple varieties are still available to us today. And thanks to Bill, our Produce Manager, we’ve got a whole bunch of them here at Rising Tide Market!

While supermarket apples look great (uniformly round and shiny), they often lack in taste. And while heirloom apples sometimes look funky (lumpy, pear-shaped, freckled) they can taste absolutely FANSTASTIC, and boast a complexity flavors that will make you think of the historic apple in a whole new light.

Flavor for Days

Do an experiment. Plan an informal tasting of some of these treasured, old-fashioned apples and you’ll find yourself throwing around words usually reserved for wines: floral, honeyed, spicy, aromatic, tart, crisp, lively flavored…with a dry finish!  It’s the differences among these apples that we should value, as it is their differences that make some great for cider, others for baking, others perfect for snacking all on their own. Bill can tell you which ones are best for each.

Here at Rising Tide, our heirloom apple varieties will change as they become available throughout the season so you’ll be able to try many different kinds.

Some of the HEIRLOOM APPLES in the store today:

Orleans Reinette: An 18th century French apple with great flavor

King David:  Awesome crunch, a little chewy, with a refreshing tart/sweet balance

Cortland: Tart, white flesh and a solid “appley” flavor

Crab Apples: Tiny, sweet and tart with a great crunch

Granny Smith: Tangy-tart, and crunchy

McIntosh: Crimson red with bright white flesh, a pleasant sweetness, and a good crunch

Golden Delicious:  Sweet and fragrant with a crisp flesh…a great all-around apple

(Note: we’ve also got heirloom pears, including the tiny, sweet and lovely Seckel pear and all-around crowd pleasers like the Bartlett.)

By the way, if this sort of thing interests you, there’s a great site called the Heirloom Orchardist (http://heirloomorchardist.typepad.com) that will educate you on everything you ever wanted to know about heirloom apples, including the history of each. Fascinating stuff.

And while everyone has their own favorite way to use apples, we’ve got a little something different for you here: a recipe for an Chunky Almond Fruit Spread, adapted from one by Jenny Sugar at POP Sugar Fitness. This simple-to-make snack is healthy, has just three ingredients, and is perfect for lunchboxes or anytime noshing.

Chunky Almond Fruit Spread

Yield: 4 servings

Total time: 5 minutes

Ingredients

apple| 1 medium

raw almonds| 1/8 cup

orange juice| 1 Tbsp

Directions

  1. Remove the core from the apple, and cut into chunks.
  2. Place all ingredients in a high-power blender or food processor, and blend until smooth but slightly chunky — not too long or you’ll have applesauce.
  3. Enjoy on crackers, a rice cake or even another fruit. Store leftovers in the fridge in a sealed container.

When Moo is Moot: We’re Going Nuts for Macadamia Milk

It used to be if you were dairy free (allergic, intolerant, vegan, or your own unique combo), you were out of luck in the milk department. Today, we have entire shelves dedicated to alternative milks, each with its own set of dedicated fans. So no matter you’re dairy status, you are in (a great deal of) luck.

At Rising Tide, our new favorite alternative milk is macadamia milk. It’s got all the benefits of the magnificent macadamia nut—tons of manganese, Vit E and zinc for squashing free radicals; omega-3 and monounsaturated fats for heart health; and a rich, creaminess that’s hard to find in other nut milks (if you ever eat macadamia nuts, you’ll know what we mean…the texture is just…mmm).

Milkadamia Milk macadamia milk hails from the eastern coast of Australia (the original home of the macadamia nut), from nuts grown on the family-owned Jindilli Farms. With abundant rainfall, loads of sunshine, fertile soil and low-impact farming, these nuts have the life! And you can taste it in the milk.

Available in Original and Unsweetened, Milkadamia Milk is everything you look for in a nut milk: dairy free, soy free, GMO-free and carrageenan-free. It’s particularly good steamed in a latte, blended into your favorite smoothie, soup or pudding, or simply chilled in a glass. With milk this good, you’ll never miss the dairy.
